Why the shaded side goes first
Moss is not a stain. It is a plant with a root structure that works its way under the shingle edge and lifts it. Once a shingle is lifted, water gets under it, and Pocatello's freeze-thaw swings do the rest: the moisture freezes overnight, expands, and pries the shingle a little further every cycle. Do that for a few winters and a cleaning problem quietly becomes a roofing estimate.
Lichen is worse in one way. It bonds directly to the granule surface and does not brush off. Anyone who tells you they will blast it off with a pressure washer is telling you they will take your granules with it. Granules are the layer that protects the asphalt from the sun. Strip them and you have shortened the life of the roof to save an afternoon.
