River air and field dust
Southeast Idaho is high desert. Roofs here do not get the black algae streaking people in humid parts of the country deal with, and anyone selling you that story has not looked at your roof. What we get is moss and lichen, and it shows up where slopes stay damp: north sides, tree-shaded sections, and low spots packed with debris.
Near the river, more of the roof qualifies. Damp air means a shorter drying window, so growth gets more of a foothold before the sun burns it back. That is why a Shelley roof and a roof ten miles out in open country can be the same age and look nothing alike.
Shelley is a small town ringed by potato fields with the Snake River close by, and those two facts explain most of what we find on roofs here. The fields send dust. The river sends damp air that keeps slopes from drying out the way they would a few miles inland. Put dust on a slope that stays wet and you have the conditions moss needs.
Spud Day is the thing everybody knows Shelley for, and it lands in September right about when the fields are working hardest. That is the season the roofs take on the most material. By spring, that material has been sitting in the valleys through freeze-thaw all winter, packed down and holding water in exactly the spot you do not want it.
What we do on the roof
Every roof gets soft washed. A pressure washer strips the granules off asphalt shingles and voids most warranties, so it stays on the truck. The process:
- Pre-wet and protect plants, beds, and anything growing under the eaves
- Pre-wet the gutters so nothing sits in them
- Shingle-safe solution applied at low pressure, killing moss and lichen at the root
- Valleys cleared of field dust, leaves, and packed debris
- Gutter lines cleared and draining
- A straight report on what we found up there

We get the glass all the way clean
Glass cleaned inside and out, with the hard water spotting lifted off underneath. Plenty of companies do a quick pass and leave the minerals behind, which is why those windows look clean for a week and then don't.
